THE FASTER WE MOVE

The Important Step of Identifying an Unmet Need for Your IIT

Identify the problem

Starting an Investigator-Initiated Trial (IIT) can be both exciting and scary. Getting to develop your own idea can be very rewarding and if successful you will be able to see this idea create real change for patients and their families. But it is vital to make sure that you identify the proper unmet need for your trial or else you could end up finding it difficult to fully develop a convincing idea.

The good news: you most likely have the tools to identify an unmet need already. If you’re a practicing physician, chances are that you already have the real-life experience to identify this need. Directly seeing a problem from treating your patients, discussions with collogues, or even discussions with patients and their families, are a great way to start noticing areas that could use improvement. Further investigations can be done by reviewing academic and patient literature, market analysis reports, news outlets, and make sure you are attending yearly conferences to make sure you’re stating up to date on the latest advancements.

Evaluate the problem

Once the problem is identified, its needs to be evaluated to make sure it that can be developed into a successful clinical trial. Here are some things to consider when evaluating your idea:

1. Is the idea addressing a true problem or a mild inconvenience?

2. How is the problem currently treated or taken care of? What is the standard of care?

3. Who are the top competitors also trying to solve this problem and what are their strategies?

4. What is the patient benefit? How many people and could it lead to a significant improvement?

5. How does the cost of your idea compare to the current standard?
